Projected savings

EnergiRaven research, using cost data from Viegand Maage, estimates predominantly waste-heat-supplied networks could save residents about a142m annually across 70,000 proposed social and affordable homes. Over 20 years, the projected saving is a32.84bn. The calculations also put the network approach a31.8bn below individual air-source heat pumps over that period.

Waste heat infrastructure

The model would use heat recovered from industrial sources, including factories and breweries, with large air-source heat pumps providing additional capacity. EnergiRaven says this heat is currently released into the atmosphere but could be connected through networks to homes and public buildings. Its annual cost estimate is a39.1m, compared with a3181.1m for electric panel heating, described as an increasingly popular alternative to gas in new developments.

Policy and wider plans

The calculations arrive as the government advances plans for a3150bn of electricity-grid investment and expects five times more infrastructure to be built by 2030 than during the previous three decades. EnergiRaven argues that heat networks and waste-heat recovery should accompany grid expansion. A separate EnergiRaven and Ordnance Survey map identified a possible Manchester Heat Highway, which could serve 85% of homes in the city.
