Local service begins

The service commenced in early October 2026 and offers a single access point for adults and children registered with a Dudley GP who need wheelchairs for medical reasons. It is AJM Healthcare’s 12th Integrated Care System area. Each user is considered by a multidisciplinary team and, where eligible, receives equipment with maintenance, repairs and reassessment as needs change.

Community coverage and demand

The service is intended to support almost 325,000 people, including more than 66,500 residents aged 65 and over and nearly 58,000 children younger than 15. More than 1,000 referrals were made to Dudley’s wheelchair service between 2022/23 and 2024/25, indicating sustained local demand. AJM says the service also addresses clients’ social, educational and family needs alongside clinical requirements.

Midlands presence and partnership announcement

AJM says the Dudley site extends its Midlands presence through Active Design, a Birmingham company producing postural seating and mobility equipment that joined AJM in 2022. Chief executive Mat Pickering said the organisation’s priorities include prompt assessments, reliable equipment and cooperation with NHS partners. Separately, the Wheelchair Football Association announced that it was partnering with AJM to launch an e-learning platform for powerchair football players, coaches, officials and aspiring participants.
