Recognition for veteran support

Laura Hays, director of Scottish mobility equipment specialist Thistle Help, has been recognised for her continued commitment to person-centred mobility support for veterans in her local community. Through her work, individuals can access equipment intended to support independence and quality of life. She was one of two women from Ayrshire honoured by the Soldiers’, Sailors’ and Airmen’s Families Association (SSAFA).

Award recipients and roles

Susan Preece was also recognised. An RAF veteran and military spouse of more than 20 years, she is a retired senior tax manager and treasurer of SSAFA’s Ayrshire and Arran Branch. The award acknowledged her role in supporting branch operations and the delivery of services. SSAFA presents its Regional Recognition Awards twice each year to volunteers, staff and supporters across Scotland.

SSAFA and community contribution

SSAFA Scotland Regional Chair Walter Gallacher praised both recipients for their contribution to the organisation’s work in Ayrshire. Hays said Thistle Help had supported SSAFA for several years and that helping customers address mobility challenges was a particularly rewarding part of the team’s work. The awards underline the contribution of charities, volunteers and mobility equipment providers to practical support for veterans. Separately, Thistle Help recently raised more than £1,700 for a local children’s charity through a coffee morning at its Irvine showroom.
