Championships planned for Liverpool

The IWBF Wheelchair Basketball European Championships 2027 are scheduled for 11–19 September at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena. The tournament is expected to feature 18 men’s and women’s national teams from across Europe, while qualification for the LA 2028 Paralympic Games will be at stake. Great Britain’s teams will compete at home, giving local audiences the opportunity to watch leading European players.

New steering group members

Adepitan, a 2004 Paralympic wheelchair basketball bronze medallist and disability-representation advocate, joins the group to support efforts to reach new audiences and challenge assumptions about disability in sport. MacSorley, a Great Britain international, will focus on the athlete experience. His role on the IWBF Players’ Commission, representing Europe, adds an international perspective on players’ priorities.

Planning and wider ambitions

The steering group will provide strategic oversight and help guide event planning, with athlete and spectator needs considered. Its membership includes representatives from Liverpool City Council, British Wheelchair Basketball, UK Sport and UKEL, alongside four independent members and an independent chair. Organisers also aim to raise the sport’s profile, encourage participation and increase visibility for disabled athletes.
