Emma: when a city trip proves harder than expected

Emma’s Berlin account challenges a simple accessible-city label by describing how surfaces affected her own powerchair journey.

A summary of the author’s own trip. Access details describe that visit and should be checked again before booking. Emma explicitly says she does not speak for all disabled travellers.

The gaps between attractions

Emma found uneven paving, gaps and kerbs exhausting and uncomfortable. Limited trunk control made jolts particularly difficult for her. She describes moving slowly and needing help from her partner at some kerbs.

A usable room did not solve street access

Her hotel room included features that worked for her, but restaurants and shops with steps added barriers during the day. The account is explicitly personal: it explains why a city praised by some wheelchair users can still be difficult for another traveller with different seating and support needs.
