Hands-free mobility

Eve is a self-balancing personal exoskeleton designed to help adults stand and walk without holding crutches. Wandercraft says it is intended for people aged 18 and older across neurological levels of spinal cord injury, including users who may lack the arm or hand function required by many other exoskeletons. The device is designed to complement, rather than replace, a wheelchair.

User limits and environment

The system is intended for users weighing up to 220 pounds and measuring up to 6 feet 4 inches. Its battery is rated for four hours, and the device can move in multiple directions while being customized for each user. Current approval covers level indoor surfaces and open-air areas such as patios, terraces and courtyards. Surfaces must be firm, dry and smooth; stairs, slopes, ramps, wet or icy ground, crowded areas, parking lots and roadways are excluded.

Assessment and training

Eligibility begins with a virtual screening and test sessions, followed by an individual assessment and practitioner prescription. A companion must complete training and attend every use. After qualification, the user and companion complete five training sessions covering transfers, remote-control operation, level-surface walking, daily activities, and safety and emergency procedures before receiving clearance.
