Large Family Cars on Motability: 7-Seat and 9-Seat Options Compared

When a five-seat car is not enough, the Motability Scheme has a clear ladder of larger options: seven-seat SUVs such as the Peugeot 5008, seven-seat MPVs such as the Ford Tourneo Connect, and vans that seat up to nine, such as the Ford Tourneo Custom. This guide compares the three sizes, with the seat counts, boot space and advance payments that decide which one fits a wheelchair-using household.

All checked 3 November 2026.

How big do you actually need?

Start from the people and the kit, not the badge. A seven-seat SUV works when the third row is used occasionally and the wheelchair folds into the boot. A seven-seat MPV works when sliding doors and a taller roofline matter for getting in and out. A nine-seat van works when you regularly carry six or more people plus a wheelchair, or when the wheelchair user travels as a passenger in a converted WAV. The Motability car lease runs for three years with insurance, servicing, maintenance, breakdown cover and road tax included, and a mileage allowance of up to 30,000 miles over the term, so size also affects running practicality: a van is harder to park and more expensive to fuel than an SUV, and that daily reality matters more than the occasional full load.

Seven-seat SUVs: the Peugeot 5008

The Peugeot 5008 is a seven-seat SUV with a highly modular interior: both the second and third rows fold, creating up to 2,310 litres of space, and the raised SUV profile makes the boot easier to load than a low estate. It is available on the Motability Scheme from £2,999 advance payment according to current dealer listings, with petrol, diesel and fully electric E-5008 versions, the electric version offering up to 410 miles of range. Higher trims add drive assist features including adaptive cruise control and lane assist, which matter for drivers who cover long distances. The 5008 suits a household that wants SUV driving position and occasional seven-seat use, but its third row is best for children or shorter journeys, and a rigid wheelchair will not fit in the boot with all seven seats in use.

Vans that seat eight or nine: the Tourneo Custom

The Ford Tourneo Custom seats up to nine people in a footprint no bigger than a large family car, with up to 5,472 litres of luggage space and a track-based seating system that lets the rear seats fold forward, fold flat or be removed entirely. It is powered by a 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel with a manual or eight-speed automatic gearbox, and is sold in Trend, Titanium, Active and Titanium X variants. The smaller Tourneo Connect, by contrast, seats five or seven depending on bodystyle, with the Grand Tourneo Connect offering up to 2,620 litres of storage. For a wheelchair-using household, the key difference is that the Tourneo Custom's size also makes it a base for WAV conversions: GowringsVersa Mobility's Grand Tourneo Connect conversion, for example, seats up to six plus one wheelchair passenger, or seven ambulant passengers, with a four-point wheelchair securing system rated to 200 kilograms.

Which size fits your household

Use this comparison before ordering. | Peugeot 5008 | Ford Tourneo Connect | Ford Tourneo Custom | Seats | 7 | 5 or 7 | Up to 9 | Maximum load space | 2,310 litres | 2,620 litres (Grand) | 5,472 litres | Body style | SUV | MPV | Van | WAV conversion available | No | Yes, Grand Tourneo Connect | Yes | Choose the 5008 if you want an SUV and use the third row occasionally, the Tourneo Connect if sliding doors and a taller cabin matter, and the Tourneo Custom if you regularly carry eight or nine people or need a WAV conversion with room for the whole family. In every case, test the actual vehicle with your own wheelchair and your usual passengers: seat counts on paper do not tell you whether the boot swallows your chair, or whether the third row leaves room for anything else.

Drive-from-Wheelchair or Internal Transfer? Choosing a WAV You Can Drive

If you use a wheelchair and want to drive, there are two distinct WAV routes: drive directly from your wheelchair, or transfer inside the vehicle to an adapted driver's seat. The first keeps you in your chair for the whole journey, the second gives you a car seat and usually more passenger space. This guide compares drive-from-wheelchair and internal transfer vehicles, with the trade-offs that matter before you order.

Electric Saloon Cars on Motability with Lane-Keep Assist: What to Check

Electric saloons pair a low, aerodynamic body with the driver assistance systems that matter most on long journeys: lane-keep assist, lane-follow assist and highway driving assist. The Hyundai IONIQ 6 is the clearest example of the breed, and its specification shows what to look for. This guide explains which assistance features actually help wheelchair users and drivers with reduced mobility, and why scheme availability must be checked against the current price list before you order.

Motability Tax Changes: Why Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles Stay ExemptGUIDES

Motability Tax Changes: Why Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles Stay Exempt

Wheelchair accessible vehicles are exempt from the Motability Scheme tax changes that took effect on 1 July 2026. VAT now applies to advance payments and Insurance Premium Tax applies to new leases, but the government has confirmed that neither change applies to vehicles designed for, or substantially and permanently adapted for, wheelchair or stretcher users. If you lease a WAV, the tax changes should not raise your lease cost; if you lease a standard car, the average advance payment is expected to rise by around £400 over a three-year lease.
