Changi Airport wheelchair assistance: what to arrange before you travel

Airport wheelchairs, airline assistance and help with your own powerchair are different arrangements. Use this guide to put the right request in the right place before a Changi journey.

Changi Airport wheelchair assistance: what to arrange before you travel

Editorial illustration of an airport assistance discussion; it does not depict a specific Changi service or traveller.

Service details were checked against Changi Airport and Singapore Airlines information on 29 September 2026. Confirm arrangements for your airline, flight and terminal before travel.

In brief

  • Ask your airline for journey assistance when booking; an airport loan wheelchair is a separate option.
  • Describe transfers, walking and your own mobility device so the assistance matches the actual journey.
  • If travelling with a battery-powered chair, obtain approval and handling instructions from the operating airline.

Start with the assistance you actually need

Changi Airport lists complimentary self-assist wheelchairs at information counters in its four terminals. They are for use at the airport and are available on a first-come-first-served basis; the airport also offers an advance booking route. This is different from an airline-arranged wheelchair service, where staff assist a passenger through departure, arrival or transit. Changi advises requesting the airline service when booking a flight, preferably at least 48 hours before departure.

Tell the airline which parts of the route need help: reaching check-in, travelling to the gate, transferring to an aisle chair, boarding, connecting, or reaching the arrival hall. Say whether you can walk short distances or use stairs. These practical details help the airline arrange the right level of assistance; a generic wheelchair request may leave important handovers unclear.

Make one plan for each leg of the journey

For a connection, name the arriving and departing flights and ask where assistance begins and ends. Singapore Airlines advises allowing extra transit time because transfers can take longer. Confirm the assistance request with every operating airline if the itinerary uses more than one carrier.

Keep the confirmation, booking reference and a short description of the help you need available offline. At the airport, identify yourself to the airline or assistance team and check that the request appears on your booking. If a gate or flight changes, ask staff to carry the assistance arrangement through to the new route.

If you use your own powerchair

An airport loan wheelchair does not settle how your own chair will travel. Give the airline the model, dimensions, weight in its travel configuration, battery type and manufacturer handling instructions. Agree when the chair will be handed over, what can be detached, how it is switched off or protected from accidental activation, and where it will be returned. Do not improvise a battery-disconnection or lifting method from another model's instructions.

Singapore Airlines says airline approval is required for battery-powered mobility aids and asks passengers to contact it at least 48 hours before departure. It also publishes aircraft cargo-hold dimensions and battery requirements. Those details are specific to its service; obtain the operating carrier's current approval for your actual flight and equipment. Photograph the chair and detachable parts before handover, and inspect them when returned.

Know what each Changi option covers

Changi describes a complimentary self-assist wheelchair loan, an airline wheelchair service and a separate paid concierge wheelchair service. The paid option is a personalised airport journey service; Changi recommends booking it at least 48 hours before arrival. Check its current scope and charge directly if it interests you.

Special Assistance Lanes are available at immigration for travellers using mobility aids and others who qualify. Changi also directs travellers who need help on site to Care Ambassadors or information counters. A lane, a loan chair and staff support solve different problems, so ask for each element you need rather than assuming one request covers all three.

A short confirmation checklist

Before departure, confirm the operating airline's assistance request, your transfer needs, any powerchair approval, the planned handover and return points, and who to contact if the itinerary changes. On arrival at Changi, find the airline or airport contact point named in your plan. Before leaving the airport, check that your own chair and detachable parts are present and working as expected.

This guide is a planning aid. Availability, handling rules and service charges can change, and the airline's confirmed arrangement for your flight takes precedence over a general article.

Flying with a power wheelchair in 2026: battery rules under IATA's 67th edition

Flying with a power wheelchair in 2026 means dealing with the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, 67th edition — which classifies battery-powered mobility aids as UN 3556 vehicles and sets hard watt-hour limits. Here is what the current rules require for lithium and spillable batteries, what information your airline needs in advance, and what changes are already on the horizon for 2027.
